The object of the game is to bounce your character from one end of the level to the finishing line. Sounds easy, but your character can't stop bouncing or hit his head on anything. Playing the first level will have you sucked in until you beat the game. Not quite a parody of Starcraft, it's an entirely different game all together and has no ties with Starcraft. Mudcraft is fairly easy and comprehensive. In Mudcraft, there is a main 'base', which is a puddle of mud which creates more mud people. The only two resources required to build more mud people is dirt and water which can be found at dirt holes and ponds placed around the map. In each level, a certain task is given to move onto the next, usually involving constructing something early in on the game and as you move on through the game, more complex tasks will be given. Anyways, you get the point.

Quite a great game, one of the best freeware games I've played in awhile. In Navy Mission, you take control of a small boat and must defeat waves of enemies, be it small boats, big boats and even planes. All of the missions start on easy mode, but once a level is beaten it will be available on a harder difficulty level. There are a total of 3 weapons available, which all have their uses. The weapons include: a machine gun, cannons and missles. All in all, the game is quite fun and is definetely worth a download.

New version of Icy Tower has been released!

Yes, you heard it right. Ork Attack is a classic high score game in which you are a knight, trying to defend your castle from the Orks. Players can fly solo, or join forces for a two-player cooperative fight using the keyboard or a joystick. Much like its arcade predecessors, Wings of Megaira requires lightning fast reaction times and quick thinking to succeed. Although the game's environments are rendered in full 3D, the game controls in a simple 2D fashion.

Players have access to three types of weapons that grow more powerful with use, allowing for multiple play styles and strategies. Although outfitted with a machine gun to begin with, players can steal the souls of their enemies, which takes the enemy's weapon type. The weapon type an enemy carries is illustrated by the color of that enemy, red being a machinegun type, blue a laser type, and green a grenade type. Powerups will also appear in the midst of an enemy's destruction to aid the player towards their goal.

Players can also activate a shift in time, when the world slows down to a crawl while the player massacres the momentarily sluggish enemies. The number of enemies destroyed during a time shift multiplies the payoff. (From author's homepage)

Homepage

Freeware Dungeon Classics

Dungeon's Deep is a great site/list of classic rogue-like and dungeon freeware games. For a 100% free game, I'm not sure it gets any better(other than Enemy Territory or America's Army).

In Shadow Armada, you take control of a team of space ships. The object is simple, destroy every single one of your opponent's ships. Here's the great part; the game has great A.I. and network play. There's only one bit of trouble though, not a whole lot of people play online.

The game sports normal sorts of weapons, missles, MGs, etc.

Gameplay goes like this, each player(or CPU) takes turns choosing a path for their fleet. Each team must try to anticipate where the opponent's ships are going, so they can point their missles in the right direction. After you choose your moves, watch the battle unfold.

This game is excellent, once a bigger following starts up, I have a feeling this game will become quite popular. There is also rumor that GameHippo is reviewing this game, hopefully a full length review should pop up within the week.

Shadow Armada Page

Notrium 1.34!

No big changes of Notrium, just a ton of bug fixs. Judging by the developer's site, I normally wouldn't download this game, but from the whacky description and the positive feedback/reviews, I decided to try it.

This is actually a pretty good adventure game, here is the description(from the author's homepage): This game is heavy on the "humor" side of things, with a variety of wacky characters, interesting scenes to explore, and an amusing, unique and interesting storyline.

The setting of the story takes place in a type of small "Amusement Park" called "Stickz & Ballz". The main attraction of the park is the Mini-Golf Course (thus the Stickz & Ballz name), as well as a Hunted House of Mirrors and a Video Arcade, plus a large shop with snacks and souvenirs as well as more areas to explore.

Fun little game.

http://www.adventure.easyurl.org

New game: Fire Fight

A brand new game was just released, Fire Fight by Jonny Comics. You play a spaceship-type figure on an abstract-looking plane (not an airplane) and fire missiles that resemble trapezoidal pieces of paper. It's fast-paced and its only con is its repetitive nature. Your enemies change up a bit - like, say from going from triangles to squares, and your weapon stays constant. It's jolly good fun. Back then I began because I always enjoyed making my own levels for games - yet I always felt the game's editors were either unhandy or very restricted - so at one point I decided I wanted to learn a programming language, and my dad turned up with floppy disk reading 'Superlogo'. Just for the record, in case you meant when I started programming with C++, I started C++ about a year ago, when I found Superlogo being too restricted once you wanted to do more advanced things.

>What gave you the idea to make Divided?

I once had an idea for a very large adventure called "Wonderful Mind" - which in the end proved rather impossible to make due to it being very large and my inexperience with C++ programming. So I went looking for a smaller project, still set in the Wonderful Mind universe. At one point I got this picture in my head of a cave with a stairs and 2 'cottages' - soon after that I thought of the ending of Divided; after that I worked my way back, using details of Wonderful Mind, most adapted, and a lot of new things. However, the book you read at the start of Divided contains the background plot of Wonderful Mind.

>Do you think you're going to make a sequel? Any other games you are
in the process of making? Perhaps another game in the world of Divided, but I doubt a direct
sequel. Right now I'm not really working on a 'real' game alike Divided as I'm working on other work; 3d images amongst other things. However, I've got a holiday coming up, so I might make another game: perhaps an adventure, though I'd like to experiment with other genres as well.

>Will it also be freeware?
That greatly depends, really. Since I'm still a student I can spend quite a lot of time on things without having to make a living, but I'm not going to make very large games for free either. Like I said, it depends on what I want to do, what will comes on my way, how much time I have - etc.

Thanks!

RSS Feeds & You.

Too lazy to type the address in every time you want to go to the site? It's an excellent browser, much more secure than IE, and faster aswell. Pick it up at http://getfirefox.com/ .
2) Browse on over to the site. You'll notice in the bottom right corner there is a orange icon which looks like a radio wave (Or what I imagine one looks like).
3)Click the icon, go to "Subscribe to Freeware Games Source", and then place it somewhere in your bookmarks.

Take a look:

Sim Lift

Brand new game here, Sim Lift.

"Overview
Waiting in the lift lobby at my workplace for up to five minutes for a lift to arrive started me wondering how lift systems operate and if I could program one more efficiently. Add to that an endless supply of little sim people to work the lifts and watch as they either reach their destinations or storm off in a cursing rage if forced to wait too long.
I now have a new respect for the humble elevator, be they fast or slow. If you have never played Dark Disciples, you must! It is an amazing CRPG.

Dark Disiciple's Homepage

Now, on to the interview!

> What inspired you to first start programming?

Actually, I first learned business computer programming so it was originally
a career move decision, although I later turned to studying Biotechnology instead. I self-learned C/C++ at home and one day found a 'computer game developer kit' in a book store which contained a c++ compiler and Microsoft SDK 5.0, which I bought. I seriously could'nt figure it all out (the kit instructions were particularly unhelpful) but I eventually found a sample
project on the net. From memory, it was a simple arcade game where you flew around the screen in a little spaceship and there wasn't anthing to shoot at. Anyway, I managed to get
that compiled, and began tinkering with the code. I'm one of those people that learn best by example rather than explanation, so this is how I learned directx programming.
As sad as it sounds, for me programming is a lot of fun. I guess it just appeals to my methodical midset. :)

> What inspired you to make Dark Disciples?

I've been a D&D player for a long time, so as soon as I learned programming in turbo pascal (a language used for teaching programming but not much else), I wanted to make CRPGs. I honestly enjoy programming CRPG related stuff because it's fun. I get to work on something creative and technical at the same type.

I'm sure I started at least 20 different projects over the years, but never
got anything finished. The mistake I always made was to design games that were far too ambitious (and I mean this from a time point of view, not a technical point of view). I'm fully aware now of why modern commercial games require two dozen people working for two years to complete a project.
:)

When I finally worked out how to use directX, I started Dark Disciples. It started life as a true roguelike game - there was going to be largely random dungeons and insta-death. The plot
was that you had to hunt down the 7 Dark Disciples (boss monsters) and kill them. However, the further down the road I got, the more like a traditional CRPG it became. I've seen quite a few people refer to DD as a roguelike, and although I don't think it technically qualifies, it definately has some of the feel of this type of game, so I guess it's original concept still shows. In any case, the game's name became essentially meaningless as it mutated into a CRPG. :)

Anyway, like with my other projects, it was way too ambitious. The difference, this time, was that I'd put so much work into it, that I couldn't justify scapping it. So I decided to cut back on many of the features and make the game simpler. This is exactly why DD's spell system is rather odd. I also removed a convoluted (but still unimplemented) skill system and changed a few other things as well. I also nearly scrapped the 3rd module (the Niphyas module) because at the time I didn't think anyone would bother playing that far. :) After that, it was still a crap-load of work, but I can be the obsessive/compulsive type, so eventually I got it all done.

> What plans do you have for the future of Dark Disciples?

DD is still being updated every once in a while to fix bugs when they're reported and also to resolve some balance issues. There won't be any major changes though. DD1 is, from a scripting/flag point of view, fairly involved, so I'm sure bug reports will continue to trickle in. Fortunately all of the nasty ones seem to have long since been weeded out. :)

> What plans do you have for the sequal, what's been finalized? Whats been
'canned'?

DD2 is in the pipes and will probably take some time to complete. It will have more features than DD1, although the game won't deviate drastically from the original. It will have a real magic system though. ;)

Actually, it was originally going to have a multi-character party. However I wasn't enirely sure about this move, so I put a survey up on the DD website and the response was 100% against. :) To be honest, I think the relative simplicity of DD in many ways made it a more fun game and this seems to be part of the appeal. So DD2 will be a single character game like DD1. :)

Unlike the original DD2 will have a skill based system. Abilities such as pick locks will be based on a skill and modified by the relevant statistic in the more traditional manner. DD2 will also have an alchemy system (based on an alchemy skill) and a goods trading system. In both cases, they're optional endevours and not necessary to complete the game. I want to keep DD2 as non-linear as possible (within reason).

I'm still not 100% sure if missile weapons will be implemented, yet. It's not a difficult or time consuming thing to do - it's just that it tends to slow the same down somewhat (it takes several key presses to select a target and shoot).

DD2 takes place on a different continent and will involve a conflict between the native poeple (Enda) and colonialists (Seafarers). You can play as either 'race', with a different objective to complete the game. Essentially then, DD2 will comprise of 2 shorter scenarios that are interlinked. Also, alignment will play a much larger role. In fact, it will define your ultimate objective.

> Will the new game be 100% free like the first one?

Yes. I program CRPGs for fun - it's my hobby. It also frees me up to do
whatever I like without having any obligation to paying customers. :)

> Oh, one more thing, when will it be released?

I currently have 3 separate projects in the pipes (DD2 is one), each of which is about the same complexity as DD. To keep myself interested, I switch between them from time to time. This means that DD2 will not appear any time soon. In any case, I'd prefer not to give a 'release date' because a) it's certainly going to be wrong (Heh, heh) and b)I only work on it when I feel inclined to (since it's a hobby and not a job), so it's difficult to predict how much time will go into it over the months.

> Well that's the interview, thanks for letting me interview! :D :D

Hey, it's been fun. I've woffled on a bit - feel free to clip it down if you
want. :)

Naw!

Digipen

If you're in need of a good game fix, head on over to the Digipen development school website. Atomic Butcher has now been around for quite awhile now, yet now has a huge following.

Atomic Butcher plays exactly like Abuse, you move your character with A and D and use the mouse to fire. The game features 7 weapons(one being urine), 10 levels and lots of gore.

My only gripe is the game gets slightly repetitive, but that really isn't too much of a problem. RJB Software.

Just today, RJB software released a game called Afterlife. Afterlife is one helluva strange arcade game. It takes place in hell, you get to fight demons with a hot air balloon and an umbrella. Sounds strange, doesn't it?

Afterlife has more than a hundred levels, extra balloons you can unlock, hidden areas and "100 hours of solid gameplay" all in one 3mb package!

RJB software also has two other titles, which I have not played yet, Orbital Snake and XG Arena.

Star Wars Freeware

Bruno R. The author released the alpha version of his game. Think Battlefield 1942 with futuristic tanks. What the game has so far is absolutely stunning for a freeware game.

On each map, there are 8 spawn points. To win a game, your team will need to control every spawn point on the map. To protect your spawn points, you can use artilery, which is easy to use and effective.

My only gripe is the AI is incredibely good, too hard to play against, which the author will hopefully fix next release.

This game is great so far, I sure hope it turns out to be a freeware classic, because it sure has the potential.

Download(Authors Homepage)
Download(Blitz Showcase)

*At time of writing, homepage is down so I included the Blitz Showcase download also.

Historical League of Bouncy Boxing

A semi new release from Wintermute Studios and one of my favorite games at the time of this post. HLOBB is a fun poke at all of histories famous- or infamous men. Before the game, you choose the map you wish to play on(4 in all) and your character. You can play as Napolean, Abraham Lincoln, King Henry VII, Hitler, Caesar and Gandhi.

The main gist of the game is build up as much speed as you can, then time a punch to hit one of the opposing players- you'll understand it once you play it.

Excellent game from Wintermute Studios

New Codered game, Alien Arena.

Not sure if anyone remembers the smash hit FPS game, Codered and its sequals, but the author just realeased another game in the series, Alien Arena. This game has a very simple gameplay premise, paint up the biggest percentage of the "battle field". There are a few powerups, to spice up gameplay a bit. It's a very fun game to play with a bunch (4) friends, because the AI is pretty weak once you learn how they work. The game can also get repetitive. Worth a download anyways. This game has been popular for a long time and it has been for a reason. Graphics are okay and the sound effects are annoying. Where the game really shines is it's gameplay. This game is a DBZ style fight with energy balls, slow motion kicking and lots of blood. Everyone should definetely check it out, it'll take up a lot of your time.
8/10

Red Star, Modern War 2

Fun little Russian game. In this game, you have a base where swarms of enemies attack. You have an assorment of artillery, infintry, rocks, nukes and machine guns to kill them. In Sunday Panzers you control a tank rather than a car, and shoot your enemies to pieces. Sadly, this is a dissappointing release from such a good developer, but it's still all fine and dandy. The game involves shooting waves of monsters with paint, it's all color coded, so if you saw a blue monster, you shoot it with blue paint and so on and so forth. The game requires too much thinking for me, and you'll be better off with good ol' Icy Tower, also on the Free Lunch website.
6/10

Counter Strike 2D

Pretty new game here, Counter Strike 2d. This game is a remake of the classic mod for Half Life and features nice graphics and good gameplay. Unfortunetely, the developers has some major bugs to work out. The game tends to be laggy online and in a lot of cases, the game will not run for 30 seconds without closing. Fortunetely for the lag, there is a bot mode which you can play by yourself.
8/10
